There is currently no evidence to suggest that animals infected with humans play a role in the spread of COVID-19. (*)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new type of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Due to the global increase in the number of new cases, there is a growing concern for human and animal welfare, and important questions are being raised regarding prevention and best practices in the event of a positive diagnosis. In addition, another fundamental doubt has arisen among pet owners: can dogs and cats also become infected, or can they transmit this virus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a few cases of infection in domestic animals are known worldwide so far, including two dogs in Hong Kong and two cats in Belgium. Both dogs showed no signs of illness, but one cat had respiratory and digestive problems. In addition, he had according to US Department of Agriculture<\/a> a Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York also tested positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the data World Organization for Animal Health<\/a> (OIE) a World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) so far there is no evidence to suggest that animals infected with humans play any role in the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are quite common in animals. There are four genera of the family Coronaviridae (Alphacoronavirus, Betacoronavirsus, Gammacoronavirus and Deltacoronavirus<\/em>), which cause different diseases in different animal species. The WHO emphasizes that people occasionally become infected with these viruses, which can then spread to other people. For example SARS-CoV<\/em> was associated with civets and MERS-CoV<\/em> is transmitted by one-humped camels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection with animals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Possible animal sources of COVID-19 have not yet been confirmed. Although the OIE says that current evidence suggests that the COVID-19 virus emerged from an animal source, investigations are underway to find that source (including the species involved) and to determine the possible role of an animal reservoir in the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand the differences, we spoke to our veterinarians. Herv\u00e9 Poulet, global head of vaccines for pets and horses, shares that despite the current lack of evidence that pets can transmit COVID-19, the OIE stresses that people who have contracted the disease should avoid close contact contact with your pets. Furthermore, they should follow proper hygiene procedures when handling and caring for them - after all, this is a behavior that we should always apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Cats and dogs can also be affected by their specific coronavirus, for example canine enteric coronavirus<\/em> (CCoV<\/em>), which belongs to the genus Alphacoronavirus and causes mild enteritis in dogs and infects cells in the intestine," says Herv\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean-Philippe Tronel, global technical director for pet vaccines, notes that vaccination against this animal disease already exists and is present in polyvalent dog vaccines in North America and some countries in Asia and Latin America. In addition, related to felines, there is a feline coronavirus (FCoV) that can cause a serious illness in cats known as feline infectious peritonitis. The vaccine against it is available in some countries in Europe, Asia and North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's not the same coronavirus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, people can show positivity about the presence betacoronaviruses<\/em> - such as SARS-CoV-2<\/em>, responsible for the current pandemic; SARS-CoV<\/em>, which originally caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in China in 2002 (SARS<\/em>); a MERS-CoV<\/em>, responsible for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS<\/em>), which appeared in 2012 in Saudi Arabia. It is important to emphasize that there is no evidence of human-to-animal transmission for both diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Given these differences, the treatment options for different types of coronavirus are certainly not the same. Amid the growing sense of panic over the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been reports of people seeking canine and feline coronavirus vaccines as a desperate \u2014 and wrong \u2014 way to immunize. For this reason, it is important to emphasize that these vaccines are exclusively for dogs or cats. There are no clinical tests to guarantee safety and effectiveness when used in humans," emphasizes Herv\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, Karin Botteon, veterinary consultant in the pet segment in Brazil, emphasizes that in case of any doubts, more than at any other time, during this pandemic period, it is essential to always seek the advice of a veterinarian. It is imperative to reinforce the need for preventive medicine for pets, including proper adherence to vaccination programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"As most countries in the world are currently facing a series of movement restrictions, it is very important that pet owners contact their veterinarians to get correct and professional information on best practices and advice for their own country or even region. Don't forget: when animals are healthy, people are also healthier," concludes Karin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(*) The situation regarding COVID-19 is constantly evolving. All aspects are being researched all over the world, including the study of the ways of contagion, no opportunity is being overlooked in order to gain as much information as possible. As far as we know, there is no scientific evidence of any transmission of the disease from domestic animals to humans.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
